The performance by Churchill High School from Texas, had props such as padded walls and included band members dressed in strait jackets running around the field "in an erratic manner".
The head of a local branch of the US's National Alliance on Mental Illness says he received a number of complaints, that the performance was in poor taste and ignorant of mental issues.
The school has since apologised and stopped performing the routine. They were, however, awarded eighth place in a competition.
Meanwhile a UK university in Staffordshire ordered its Ultimate Frisbee team to stop using the name 'Mental Discs' in case it was deemed offensive.
Mental health groups said the University's actions were patronising and overly politically correct.
