An animal charity says it won't seek the prosecution of Prince Edward over allegations he beat his dog while out shooting.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals said Friday that there was not enough evidence to prove that Queen Elizabeth II's youngest son Prince Edward had mistreated his black Labrador during a shoot at the royal Sandringham estate.

The charity said it launched an investigation after it saw pictures of Edward waving a stick at his dog in mid-December. It could potentially have sought animal mistreatment charges against him.

Buckingham Palace said at the time that Edward, the seventh in line to the throne, had waved his stick to break up a fight between two dogs.

It welcomed Friday's decision, but declined to comment further.
