British woman took son's ashes to court to prove to bailiffs he was dead

Julie Strange, 43 was hassled by debt collectors after the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) became convinced her son Paul had bought a car without registering it.

Despite insisting he had died in October 2006 - and even posting his death certificate - Julie was still ordered to attend court to answer the charge.

She entered the court room bearing the small wooden casket containing Paul’s remains. The case was immediately withdrawn.

Julie said: "I thought long and hard about doing what I did. But I was really worried that if I didn't turn up then Paul would be found guilty in his absence and fined. It would be nice to get an apology."
