LEGO Batman: The Videogame looks amazing, thanks to a cool LEGO presentation that captures the look and feel of the Batman universe. From expertly detailed environments to the combat pushes LEGO Batman above the LEGO Star Wars games, making it one of 2008's most wanted.
Similar to LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Batman takes the DC Comics franchise and merges it with LEGO. Batman, his sidekick Robin and a host of characters, including Commissioner Gordon, the Joker, Catwoman, Penguin and Scarecrow find a new adventure in Gotham City. As such, expect many references to the comic books and Batman staples, including the Batmobile, a romp through a funhouse, courtesy of the Joker and combat atop rooftops. You'll scale tall buildings, defeat bosses and use LEGO pieces to create a host of items, from ladders that let you reach new areas to a gyrocopter.
In addition, the game features cool hand-to-hand fighting, as you punch bad guys and watch as they fall apart. However, the developers added some humor with decapitations. Often times, Batman's batarang will curve and knock off a character's head (no blood, of course), and the headless LEGO will walk around lazily for a few seconds. It's fun to watch.
We don't have a final number, but LEGO Batman will contain numerous playable characters from the Batman universe, but instead of just swapping them in and out to experience the same adventure, the developers crafted a separate villain mode in which you experience things from the villain's point of view.
Furthermore, the game features co-operative play, both off and online (Xbox Live/PlayStation Network). Not only will you and a friend defeat bad guys, but you'll also work to complete puzzles. In order to open a door, for instance, one of you may need to activate a switch while the other stands in place.
Visually, the game is incredible. Whereas LEGO Star Wars features attractive but simple shapes, Batman better taps the graphical powers of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with improved visuals. In addition, it'll run at 720p/1080p, for gamers looking to show off their HDTVs.
With loads of content, attractive graphics and plenty of style, LEGO Batman: The Videogame has a lot to offer. Expect us to post a utility belt full of content leading up to its fall release.
