It shouldn't come as a surprise when something gamers desire becomes all the more affordable, they snap it up in droves. Its worked in the past and continues to do so to this present day. At the 2009 Tokyo Games Show Sony announced that the new (and cheaper) PS3 slim has sold a staggering 1 million units worlwide since its launch on September 1, 2009.
In Australia alone, more than 40,000 units of the 120 GB slimline model were sold between launch on the 3rd of September up to 20th September. Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand said, “The new PlayStation 3 slim model has experienced exceptionally strong sales in the Australian market. The new PS3 console reached 40,000 units in just two and a half weeks in Australia, and sold through more than 21,000 units in the first 4 days alone. This device was the key contributor to the PS3 platform generating over $30 million of retail value since launch, and we have experienced tremendous support from our retail partners.”
Australia will also get a 250GB PS3 model mid October at RRP$599.95; the bundle comes with a selection of either UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, SingStar Motown and EyePet. The 250GB model has the same hardware specifications as the current model.
To cap off the slew of announcements, Sony also gave out more details on its upcoming motion controller. The device will be out in Spring 2010 (Northern Hemisphere) and will require the PlayStation Eye camera to work. The new controller, equipped with high-precision, highly accurate motion sensors are capable of recognizing and tracking a user’s face and voice as well as body motion. Furthermore, the new controller is also equipped with a rumble feature, familiar to the PlayStation DUALSHOCK 3 series controller.
