When you open your closet door, what do you see? There are 10 basic, must-have wardrobe essentials, according to fashion designer Tim Gunn.
Gunn says the key to getting fashion right – no matter how much or how little money you can spend – is the same for men and women. "First of all, know who you are and how you want the world to perceive you," he told TIME magazine. "Understand what colors, what patterns look good on you and the whole interaction of silhouette, proportion and fit. If you can get that right, you'll look great in anything."

2. Classic white shirt
3. A skirt
4. A day dress
5. A basic black dress

9. A trench coat

What is the worst fashion trend?
There are two. Wearing sandals with socks. And Crocs. "I mean, the Croc – it looks like a plastic hoof," he opined to TIME. "How can you take that seriously? I know it's comfortable; I understand that. But if you want to dress to feel as though you never got out of bed, don't get out of bed."
