Carrie Prejean, also known as Miss California, made news at the Miss USA pageant on April 19 when she replied to a question posed by gossip blogger Perez Hilton about her opinion of legalizing same-sex marriage. Prejean made it clear she opposed it and has been in the news ever since. Now she claims that a Web site that posted a nearly-nude photo of her did so in an attempt to mock and belittle her Christian faith.

The Associated Press reports that Prejean, 21, says the racy photo was taken as a modeling shot when she was a teenager. It shows her wearing only a pair of quite revealing pink panties with her back turned to the camera and her arm covering her breasts. "I am a Christian, and I am a model," Prejean said in a statement released to the media. "Models pose for pictures, including lingerie and swimwear photos. Recently, photos taken of me as a teenager have been released surreptitiously to a tabloid Web site that openly mocks me for my Christian faith. I am not perfect, and I will never claim to be."

Prejean was the first runner-up to Miss North Carolina in the Miss USA pageant. Some claim that her response to the question about same-sex marriage may have cost her the title. Meanwhile, an official with the Miss USA pageant says the nearly-nude photo is not appropriate for a beauty queen. "I can assure you they were quite inappropriate, and certainly not photos befitting a beauty queen," pageant judge Alicia Jacobs, who is also a reporter for NBC's Las Vegas affiliate, told NBC News. Even though the Web site claimed to have six photos, only one was actually posted. Still, Prejean has signed a contract with Miss USA that prohibits her from being photographed "in a state of partial or total nudity."
