The Sunday Mail reports that Selma is suffering for her art in the new sitcom, "Kath and Kim," a takeoff on Australia's most popular TV show. Selma plays a grown daughter who comes home to live with her mother, played by Molly Shannon. Becoming the style-challenged Kim is a huge embarrassment to Selma since some parts of the costume, including the rhinestone-covered acrylic nails, numerous hair extensions and the 20 pounds she gained on purpose for the role--become part of her real-life attire as well.
"I wear rhinestones on my nails. This is a new thing for me because I have to wear these nails in real life, so I am always apologizing for them," she told the Daily Mail. "Then I realize I am apologizing to people who have these nails, so I am insulting people every day. It's been really, really strange wearing this wardrobe around, and having all this hair (extensions). It's been fascinating asking 'What does an American girl think makes her really pretty'? They think it's pretty to have extensions in, even if people know they're extensions. It just looks so fake and ugly, but it's like a status symbol."
Selma Blair is 36 years old, but easily looks 15 years younger. As an actress who has made a name for herself playing quirky characters, she says she is drawn to offbeat roles and embarrassing situations. "I need to do something just a little off," she says. "When I'm trying to do just a regular girl, there's no point. Just get like some cute girl-next-door. I can't do that regular thing. When I try to be charming it just falls flat. I'm not afraid of playing the fool; I think there's a lot of humor that can come out of it."
