How ugly is he? Pabst, a boxer mix, did what no other breed or mutt has managed to do in recent years: He grabbed the World's Ugliest Dog title from the perennial winner, the hairless Chinese crested. Pabst's defining feature is his huge underbite.

"Apart from his underbite, I think he's great looking," owner Miles Egstad, 25, of Citrus Heights, California bragged to The Sacramento Bee. "I think if you took 100 of those Chinese cresteds, you would have 100 ugly dogs. And if you have 100 boxer mixes, you're only going to get one Pabst, and that's if you're lucky."

Egstad said he adopted Pabst, now four years old and 60 pounds, when he was just six months old and named him for his "bitter beer face." He said what drew him to Pabst wasn't the ugly two-inch underbite, but rather his soft and kind eyes. Egstad said he fell in love with him immediately. When Pabst was taken to the shelter before he was adopted by Egstad, he had a large burn mark on his abdomen and was missing part of a toe. Not surprisingly with dogs that have been abused, he was timid and fearful. "All he needed was a little love, and he's the best dog I've ever had," Egstad said.

The only trick Pabst can do is sit. But he adores his owner. "I love the way he greets me when I come home," Egstad told the Sacramento Bee. "His whole body is shaking, his tail is wagging and his evil-looking grin looks like a big smile." The World's Ugliest Dog competition takes place annually in Petaluma, California. Pabst won $1,600 in prize money, as well as a collection of collars, leashes and bowls from the House of Dog, a $1,000 yearlong modeling contract and lots of publicity, including an appearance on Animal Planet.
