Dogs can be expensive to be sure, but whatever you paid for your pooch, it's nothing compared to what a Chinese millionaire plopped down for a Tibetan Mastiff. MSNBC.com reports that a woman known only by her surname of Wang, traveled to Qinghai province of northwest China to purchase an 18-month old dog, named Yangtze River Number Two, for the staggering price tag of $582,000.

Yangtze's homecoming was suitably royal. He flew into Xi'an airport in China's Shaanxi province and was escorted through an A-list entrance where he was greeted by hordes of dog lovers. Once he made his way through the throngs of fans, Yangtze was driven home in a motorcade of 30 black Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Not one car. Thirty cars!

Ms Wang told Chinese publications, "Gold has a price, but this Tibetan Mastiff doesn't." A fairly rare breed, Tibetan Mastiffs typically cost about $2,000 in the United States, but are more expensive in China where they are valued for their skills as guard dogs, notes MSNBC.

Here he is! The world's ugliest dog. Look if you dare!

Yangtze won't be lonely. Ms. Wang owns another Tibetan Mastiff with which she plans to mate Yangtze. Until now, the most expensive dog on record was a Labrador named Lancelot Encore, a cloned dog for whom a Florida couple paid $155,000.
