That's the word from a nationwide Harris Poll of 2,401 U.S. adults. In addition, 20 percent drink at least once a month, while 12 percent say they drink several times a year and six percent drink at least once a year. But not everyone drinks! Eight percent said they drink less than once a year, and 26 percent are teetotalers.
Who is more likely to drink?
-- Men are more likely than women to drink alcohol at least once a week (40 percent versus 19 percent).
-- Women are more likely than men to say they never drink alcohol (29 percent versus 22 percent).
-- Easterners are much more likely to drink daily and at least once a week than those who live in other regions of the country.
-- 37 percent of those living in the East drink alcohol at least once a week, compared to 26 percent of Midwesterners, 28 percent of Southerners and 29 percent of Westerners.
-- 12 percent of Easterners drink daily, compared to just three percent of both Midwesterners and Westerners.
What are we drinking?
-- 67 percent drink beer.
-- 49 percent drink domestic wine.
-- 41 percent drink vodka.
-- 32 percent drink rum.
-- 29 percent drink foreign wine.
-- 24 percent drink tequila.
-- 18 percent drink champagne.
-- 16 percent drink other whiskey, such as Canadian or Irish whiskey.
-- 15 percent drink bourbon.
-- 14 percent each drink gin and cordials.
-- 13 percent drink scotch.
