Right Way to Reach Out and Touch Your Date

By Laura Snyder

By casually touching the object of your desire, you're breaking down the intimacy barrier between strangers and building a positive connection. But in the scary world of early relationships, it can be hard to tell how much is too much, and how soon is too soon, for physical contact.

We're here to give you a hand, so to speak.

Touchy Subject #1: Connect Over Conversation

Casual, nonsexual touching is the essential way to let someone know you're interested and determine their interest in you. Notice the keywords "casual" and "nonsexual". You can achieve this by lightly touching (not stroking or pawing) your date's arm or knee while making a point talking. Or by letting your body brush up against his or hers while you're standing in line or walking through a doorway.

Touchy Subject #2: Stage a Date

Don't want to skirt around the is-it-or-isn't-it-okay question of touching? Then plan a date that makes a little contact inevitable. Take a dancing lesson, go ice skating, or play a game or sport that requires a little one-on-one. Everyone scores!

Touchy Subject #3: Think Playful, Not Passionate

Have fun with your physical contact. If you don't want to freak out over a post-date hug or kiss, gently cuff your date's chin or shoulder. Look how well it worked for Bogey ("Here's looking at you, kid") in Casablanca.

Touchy Subject #4: Touch By Gender

Body communication varies by our gender. Think about how guys act around each other: all back slapping and rough-housing. So, ladies, you can feel free to man-handle that man a little bit. Guys, on the other hand, should treat their dates like ladies. The light hand on the lower back to escort her through the door or across the street never fails.
