The disco ball will stop whirling earlier than planned.
"Xanadu," the musical loosely adapted from the cult 1980s film, will now end its run this Sunday at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre, two weeks before the Oct. 12 closing date announced last week.
It will have played 512 performances.
Producer Rob Ahrens said Tuesday the decision to close early was made to avoid losses during the current tough economic climate. The show also faced the traditionally lean box-office months of September and October.
"Xanadu" opened in July 2007 to mostly enthusiastic reviews and was one of the four shows nominated for the best-musical Tony Award. Based on the 1980 movie that starred Olivia Newton-John, the stage version features Kerry Butler, Cheyenne Jackson, Tony Roberts, Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa. It has a book by Douglas Carter Beane and was directed by Christopher Ashley.
The musical did strong business in July and August after Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast. But Goldberg departed Sept. 7, and grosses dropped. The production has yet to recoup its capitalization, estimated at between $4 million and $5 million.
"Xanadu" will play California's La Jolla Playhouse in November, followed by a six-month engagement at the Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago and then a national tour.
