The film, which was finished after his tragic death with actors Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell stepping into his role, has premiered about a year and a half after the Perth actor died.
A Ledger family spokesperson said the family was yet to see the film and did not want to speak about their son's final project.
When Ledger died after an accidental prescription drug overdose, British director Terry Gilliam nearly gave up on finishing the film, which also stars model Lily Cole and Christopher Plummer.
"Initially, I just thought, let's quit. I don't know how you carry on when the main actor dies halfway through filming," he told Sky News.
"But luckily, we had a magic mirror - and once you have one of them, things can happen.
"I keep calling it a tragical, magical adventure because that's what it is."
He believed Ledger had loved working on the fantasy film.
"Heath was enjoying life ... more than me!," he said.
"He was having a great time, he was flying on this film. He was full of energy - it was pouring out of him."
The film has received mixed responses from critics, with some unhappy with a storyline they say is difficult to follow.
The movie is about a theatre troupe who go on a magical journey, and followed Ledger's Oscar-winning turn as The Joker in The Dark Knight .
It will open in Australian cinemas on October 29.
