Rail firm CrossCountry said the cat and the money are among the more bizarre items among the 6,000 handed to them over the course of the year.

The left feline, called Holly, was found on a service in the Bristol, Southern England, area and eventually reunited with its owner.

The £30,000 in used banknotes - which were recently discovered in a green holdall on a train from London to Edinburgh - were handed to station staff. UK transport police believe they are part of a drugs deal which went wrong or other criminal act.

The most frequently forgotten objects on UK trains are mobile phones, books, umbrellas, handbags and MP3 players.
