Peru's military says two soldiers were killed and five injured when suspected Shining Path rebels attacked their patrol in a remote coca-producing valley.
A military statement says the confrontation took place Tuesday morning in the region of Vizcatan in the Apurimac River valley. No rebel deaths were reported.
The military is waging an offensive to root out rebels in Vizcatan, considered to be the last stronghold of remnants of the Shining Path.
The leftist rebel group carried out its deadliest attack in over a decade on Friday, killing 13 soldiers and two civilians in an ambush in nearby Huancavelica province.
