The one-year-old stray dog was hit by driver Marco Menozzi, in Cozze southern Italy, who says he didn't even stop when he hit the dog with his Peugeot 207 car.

The dog, however, got scooped up into the front of the car and the clung to its grille until it eventually stopped. Miraculously the dog escaped the ordeal with little other than a broken leg and bruising.

A police spokesman said: "He's a very lucky boy. He was saved because he was hit so hard - any softer and he would have bounced off the car and been crushed under the wheels."

The dog is now in police kennels looking for a new owner.
