An army spokesman says an avalanche has killed seven soldiers in the Indian portion of Kashmir.

Col. K. Umamaheswar says the army rescued eight soldiers who were partially buried by the cascading snow on Tuesday, at their post at an altitude of 14,000 feet (4,260 meters) in the Shasmbari forest area.

The region is close to the cease-fire line with Pakistan.

Frequent rain and heavy snow often trigger winter avalanches in Kashmir.

The region is divided between neighboring India and Pakistan and claimed by both. They have fought two wars over the territory since their independence from Britain in 1947.
