Co-defendants in beating case to be freed on bail

09-08-2008 - 03:30

A judge in upstate New York is freeing two Bosnian men accused in the near-fatal beating of a Binghamton University student.

Prosecutors say Sanel Softic, 21, and Edin Dzubur, 24, will be released Wednesday on $10,000 bail. The pair will be monitored electronically by the sheriff's department.

They face felony charges of first-degree assault and gang assault after a May 4 fight at a downtown Binghamton bar that left student Bryan Steinhauer in a coma.

A third suspect, former Binghamton University basketball player Miladin Kovacevic, fled to his native Serbia to avoid prosecution. Despite U.S. demands, Serbia has refused to turn over Kovacevic, saying its laws do not allow the extradition of its citizens.
