British opposition leader, Sweden's PM praise California's governor

David Cameron, the leader of Britain's opposition Conservatives, and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt praised California's Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday as a model for modern center-right politics.

Reinfeldt and Cameron met in London to discuss boosting alliances involving Schwarzenegger, French leader Nicolas Sarkozy, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and themselves.

Cameron said Schwarzenegger, who addressed the Conservative Party annual rally last year in a video message, has set out an impressive agenda.

"He's been a trailblazer for the environment," Cameron said in a speech at London's School of Economics. "He's outlined a positive vision of environmental reform _ based on knowledge, technology, expanding market-based solutions and empowering people to take the right decision."

Cameron aims to match Reinfeldt in ousting a long-standing center-left government, hoping to defeat Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour Party _ in power since 1997 _ in an election likely in 2010.

Reinfeldt, who also held brief talks on Tuesday with Brown on European issues, ended 12 years of leftist rule in Sweden in 2006.
