A bus apparently lost control on a curve in a mountainous area in India's portion of Kashmir and plunged into a river Thursday, killing at least 22 people and injuring three others, police said.

It was not immediately clear how many passengers were traveling on the privately owned bus, and rescue workers were searching the fast-flowing river for more possible victims, said Mumtaz Ahmed, a senior police official supervising the rescue work.

The accident occurred near Warda, a village 95 miles (150 kilometers) southeast of Srinagar, the main city in India's Jammu and Kashmir state, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hemant Lohia said.

The bus appeared to have been rounding a curve when the driver apparently lost control, plunging the vehicle into the Chenab river, Lohia said.

The three injured people were hospitalized, he said.
