Call it a 1970s retro look in the aughts.
That's the word from DuPont, which is forecasting car colors through 2009. The most eye-popping changes will be seen in small and sporty cars that will take on look-at-me hues that are primarily favored by young people and women, reports Reuters. For example, BMW's Mini comes in 12 basic colors, including chili red, racing green, hot orange and cool blue.
If you just can't stomach the idea of a bright orange car, rest easy. Neutral colors will still be the No. 1 choice for most drivers, especially those who are risk-averse. And the pricier the car, the more boring, er...neutral, the color. "The more expensive the car and the higher the value, the less colorful it is," Sandra Krueger, an auto colors specialist in Germany for U.S.-based chemicals company DuPont, told Reuters. "There are exceptions such as Ferrari that is classically red, but you are not going to see expensive cars that are orange or bright green," she said. "Taste in autos is very conservative."
What is on the horizon in new car colors?
- Silver remains the favorite in both the United States and around the world.
