The French president's office says Michelle Obama and other first ladies of NATO nations have canceled a visit to a cancer hospital for security reasons.

Some 1,000 protesters are staked out in the historical center of the French city of Strasbourg, near where the women were meant to visit a hospital and the city's renowned cathedral Saturday on the sidelines of a NATO summit.

Police have clashed repeatedly with anti-war and anti-capitalist protesters in Strasbourg in recent days.

An official in the French president's office says the hospital visit was canceled at the last minute on recommendation of police for security reasons. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of presidential policy.
