The French Embassy in Ecuador says a French scientist working in the South American country has died after being shot in the back near her home.
Embassy press attache Nicolas Cimbaro says 26-year-old Charlotte Mazoyer died Saturday from wounds to her heart and lungs. Mazoyer had worked for two years at the Institute of Development Research in Quito.
Mazoyer planned to leave Ecuador Sept. 25 when her work ended, Cimbaro said Tuesday.
Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Fander Falconi said he is seeking all information in the case and that police are looking for the killers.
Initial reports said the scientist didn't receive prompt medical attention at a clinic north of the capital. But the clinic said it has videos to prove she received timely care.
