East Germany's last hardline communist leader and other prominent figures from the country's left have paid tribute to the founders of the German Communist Party.

Egon Krenz, the East German leader when the Berlin Wall fell, and Left Party lawmakers led thousands at the ceremony Sunday at the Friedrichsfelde cemetery.

They are marking the 90th anniversary of the deaths of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, who were killed Jan. 15, 1919, by right-wing militiamen during a failed uprising.

The tradition honoring the two started in the former East Germany and was revived in 1992 by the ex-communist Party of Democratic Socialism.

That party is now known as The Left after a merger with some disgruntled Social Democrats.
