Germany won't seek the extradition from the Netherlands, at least for now, of a man wanted in the 2007 mob killings of six people in the western city of Duisburg, prosecutors said Saturday.
Prosecutors in Duisburg have agreed that Giovanni Strangio, an Italian arrested outside Amsterdam last month, should be taken first to Italy, spokesman Detlef Nowotsch said.
Strangio, 30, is accused of shooting six Italians outside a restaurant in Duisburg on Aug. 15, 2007.
The bloody crime stemmed from a feud between two rival families and drew international attention to the 'ndrangheta, a crime syndicate based in the southern Italian region of Calabria.
"We are stepping back for the time being," Nowotsch said. But, he added, "that doesn't mean that we don't want to have Strangio."
Nowotsch said it was possible Germany might ask Italy to extradite Strangio later.
