Gimpl takes WCup snowboard big air in Barcelona

Stefan Gimpl won a snowboard World Cup big air event on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Austrian snowboarder secured his second win of the season after edging Swiss boarder Gian-Luca Cavigelli on the purpose-built ramp inside the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.

Norwegian skier Gjermund Braaten finished third ahead of Benedikt Nadig of Switzerland and Roope Tonteri of Finland.

Gimpl leads the overall World Cup standings with 2,000 points after also winning the opening big air event in London. Cavigelli and Kazuhiro Kokubo of Japan are second on 1,600 points, while three others are tied in third with 1,000.

The next snowboard World Cup event will be a big air at Stockholm on Nov. 21.
