About 15,000 British and Irish Lions fans contributed to a colorful sight for the first test against world champion South Africa on Saturday.
Both ends of Kings Park stadium were a sea of red with Lions fans taking up large sections of the 52,000-capacity ground. But the match was not a sellout, with several blocks of empty seats even through tickets have been on sale for more than a year.
The game kicked off under a cloudless sky in comparatively warm conditions.
The Springboks are aiming to make up for their surprise 2-1 series defeat the last time these two teams met 12 years ago. The Lions, a combination of players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, have not won a test since beating Australia at Brisbane in 2001.
