An Indonesian court has sentenced an Australian man to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting 12 boys on the resort island of Bali.

Police say Grandfield Philip Robert, who has been living in the country for 10 years, was arrested in August after authorities were notified by the victims or their parents.

Presiding Judge Frida Aryani told the Singaraja District Court on Bali on Thursday that the defendant violated child protection laws and the country's criminal code.

She sentenced him to eight years in jail and imposed a $5,000 fine.

The 62-year-old retired accountant admitted to having sexual relations with the boys _ all aged between 15 to 18 _ between March and July of 2008 but said he would appeal the verdict.
