Iraq's government and the International Olympic Committee agreed on a new process to govern the election of the Iraqi Olympic body, an official statement said Monday.

The agreement, reached on the sidelines of the Olympic Games in Beijing, is the latest chapter in a three-month dispute between Iraq and the IOC.

The tussle began when Iraq's government dismissed the country's national Olympic committee, accusing its members of corruption and replaced them with a team led by a Cabinet minister.

The IOC said the move amounted to "government interference" and in May suspended Iraq's membership.

A last-minute compromise, reached late last month, allowed Iraqi athletes to participate in the Beijing Games, but it was too late for some because the entry deadlines for their sports had already passed.

Only five Iraqi athletes are competing in Beijing.

Under the latest agreement, Iraq will organize elections for the country's sports federations, whose members will then vote for the new national Olympic committee, according to the statement.

Iraq's Independent Election Commission, judiciary and the IOC will supervise the election.

"The Iraqi government is keen to have elected Iraqi sports federations and an Iraqi National Olympic Committee in a transparent, democratic and fair way," the statement added. It did not say when the vote for the sports federations or the national Olympic committee would be held.
