An Irish couple were killed and their three children injured when their van flipped on a rural highway in northeastern Iowa.
Joe O'Connell, 50, died at the scene of the crash and his wife Anne, 44, died after being taken to University Hospital in Iowa City. Their daughter Maeve, 10, was in University Hospital's intensive care unit after surgery Monday.
Sarah, 15, and her brother Colman, 13, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sarah O'Connell had been driving the vehicle, months after getting her learner's permit. The family was on a two-week road trip.
The O'Connells were Irish citizens but lived mostly in Madison, Wisconsin. Grandparents of the children were reported to be en route to Iowa from Ireland Monday.
