Israeli police clash with ultra-Orthodox Jews

Ultra-Orthodox Jews pelted Israeli riot police with stones and vegetables during a large protest against a parking lot the city is seeking to open on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath.

The observant are forbidden to drive during the Sabbath.

Police did not say how many people were involved, but witnesses said around 3,000 protesters marched Saturday to the parking garage at Jerusalem City Hall and tried to break through the police cordon surrounding the building. Police used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby says officers pushed the protesters back to surrounding streets where they hurled stones and refuse.

Police say they did not make any arrests to avoid further inflaming emotions.
