Primoz Kozmus won the men's hammer throw on Sunday, giving Slovenia its first ever Olympics track and field gold medal.
Kozmus, silver medalist at the world championships last August, threw his season-best 82.02 meters on his second attempt and held off two Belorussians.
Vadim Devyatovskiy, who was second in the 2005 worlds and fourth at the Athens Olympics, took the silver medal at 81.61. Three-time world champion Ivan Tsikhan earned bronze at 81.51.
Defending champion Koji Murofushi, awarded gold at Athens in 2004 after Adrian Annus of Hungary was disqualified for refusing a doping test, placed fifth at 80.71.
