Lazio edged Sampdoria in a penalty shootout in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday for its first trophy in five years.
Both goals were in the first half, and the teams finished regulation time 1-1 and extra time unchanged at Olympic Stadium.
In the shootout, Sampdoria's Antonio Cassano and Hugo Campagnaro missed their spotkicks, whilst Lazio's Tommaso Rocchi hit the post. Midfielder Ousmane Dabo nailed the deciding penalty for Lazio to win 6-5.
"The win has been earned by those guys," Lazio coach Delio Rossi said. "They've sacrificed themselves for the shirt all year, I'm delighted."
It was Lazio's fifth Italian Cup, and first since 2004.
Striker Mauro Zarate opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he cut in from the left wing, sprinted across the defense and blasted a shot past Sampdoria goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi.
But in the 27th Castellazzi stopped Rossi's team from doubling its lead. First, he saved Aleksandar Kolarov's powerful shot and recovered to block Goran Pandev's rebound attempt.
Cassano then showed his class to help Sampdoria draw level. Marius Stankevicius headed his cross back into the box and Giampaolo Pazzini beat David Rozehnal to head past Fernando Muslera.
Just before halftime, Muslera pushed away a fearsome Cassano free kick and just after the break he went close again, but Kolarov cleared his shot off the line.
Cassano nearly created a winner for Pazzini in the second period of extra time, but Lorenzo De Silvestri poked the ball to safety as Pazzini was about to tap the ball into an unguarded net. Sampdoria hasn't won a trophy since 1994.
Lazio felt a penalty should have been awarded for a foul by Stankevicius on Stephan Lichtsteiner, but referee Roberto Rosetti waved away the Lazio protests.
"We've suffered for this win," Lazio midfielder Cristian Brocchi said. "We've overcome some hard times to lift this trophy."
