A prominent member of Maine's Franco-American community, Augusta attorney Severin Beliveau, has been presented with the Legion of Honor, France's highest honor.
The award was presented Tuesday in a State House ceremony attended by Pierre Vimont, the French Ambassador to the U.S., and Francois Gauthier, France's consul general in Boston.
Gov. John Baldacci says Beliveau has served as a liaison for the French people and interests for many years, and has helped to establish stronger ties between Maine and France economically and culturally.
Beliveau served as honorary consul for France for 16 years and is president of the Forum Francophone des Affaires, which promotes business and economic partnerships.
