A homeless man will face court today over the alleged sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman at Bondi Beach last night.

Police arrested the 54-year-old last night after being called to Marks Park, at the southern end of Bondi Beach, about 10pm.

A 21-year-old woman told police she was walking along a footpath in the area when the man sexually assaulted her, Acting Inspector Michael Morrall, from Waverley Police, said.

The woman managed to escape and ran for help. Police found the man in Marks Park a short time later.

The 54-year-old was charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of resist police and two counts of assault police.

Inspector Morrall said the man was homeless but had lived in that area for some time.

The woman went to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital but was later released.

The man was refused bail and will appear in Waverley Local Court today.
