Health authorities in Martinique have announced the French Caribbean island's first fatal case of swine flu.

The victim, an 18-month-old girl, died Thursday at Fort-de-France's University Hospital Center.

Dr. Andre Cabie, head of the infectious diseases division at the Pierre-Zobda Quitman hospital, says the girl had suffered from serious lung problems since birth.

Since the swine flu epidemic reached Martinique in August, between 7,300 and 9,300 cases of swine flu have been reported.

France has had 26 swine flu-related deaths, with 21 of those in its overseas territories and departments.
