Brazilian authorities say a young couple and two of their children died after a mudslide engulfed their house following four days of heavy rains.
Rio state's Civil Defense department tells the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper the slide took place early Saturday near the mountain town of Petropolis. It lies about 55 kilometers (35 miles) north of Rio de Janeiro.
A 23-year-old woman, her 26-year-old husband, their 7-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son were killed. Two other children in the house were hurt, but are in stable condition.
Brazil's poor often build rickety houses on steep hillsides, making them susceptible to mudslides that kill hundreds across the nation each year.
