Feminist artist Nancy Spero, whose works have been included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, has died. She was 83.

A retrospective of her work is scheduled for next year at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Mary Sabbatino, vice president of Galerie Lelong in Manhattan, says Spero died Sunday at a hospital near her Manhattan home. The cause was respiratory complications from an infection.

Spero's work combined drawing, painting, collage and printmaking. She was active in the women's movement and decided in the 1970s to focus her art on the roles of women.

Sabbatino said Wednesday that is what set her apart as an artist: "She made the female experience central to her art's formal and thematic development."
