Police detained nearly 70 Tibetan exiles in the Nepalese capital on Thursday for protesting decades of communist rule in China.

The demonstrations came as China celebrated the 60-year anniversary of communist rule with a massive parade in Beijing.

The protesters, wearing T-shirts that said "Free Tibet," demonstrated near the Chinese Embassy's visa section and half a dozen other places in Katmandu.

Police officer Arjun Jung Shahi said authorities were screening those detained. "We will finalize a list of those to be detained and those to be released by the evening."

Thousands of Tibetan exiles live in Nepal, and thousands more are allowed to pass through the country on their way to Dharmsala, India, where Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, lives in exile.

Some Tibetans have regularly protested in Nepal since last year against Chinese rule in Tibet. The government last year banned such protests and threatened that those involved would be deported. But no one has been deported so far, and protesters are usually freed after a day in police custody.

Beijing has repeatedly asked Nepal to control the Tibetan refugees within its borders and stop the protests.
