Police are hunting four men who savagely bashed two workmen and stole their car as the men started work on Sydney's lower north shore last week.

One of the workmen was left with a broken jaw and broken hand when four men allegedly set upon them at the intersection of Herbert and Punch Streets, at St Leonards, about 1.25am last Wednesday.

The alleged offenders assaulted the men then stole their white Toyota Corolla, police said.

The men, who had just started work, called police and were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.

Police are now hunting for the men's alleged attackers, as well as the white Corolla, with NSW registration SSA 950.

One man was described as being of white or European appearance, aged in his mid-20s, about 193 centimetres tall, with a slight build. He was wearing a cap and t-shirt.

The second man was described as being of Pacific Islander appearance and aged in his mid-to-late 20s.

The third man was described as being of white or European appearance and aged in his early 20s.

No description was given of the fourth man.

Anyone with information about the identities or current whereabouts of the men, or who saw four males acting suspiciously in the area about 1.25am on October 28, is asked to contact Chatswood Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
