President Michelle Bachelet suspended operations for at least 30 days at a small airport in the Chilean capital Thursday after a small police plane crashed nearby, killing 11.
Visiting five women who were hospitalized with serious burns from the crash, Bachelet said the Tobalaba airport will remain closed except for emergency flights.
The Cessna 210 plunged into a sports field on Wednesday, killing all six people aboard and five on the ground, including a 5-year-old girl.
Authorities are still investigating the crash, but have said mechanical failure was apparently the cause.
A commission will examine safety at the airport in the populated Santiago suburb of Penalolen during the monthlong closure, Bachelet said.
"I do not want to anticipate solutions, as that requires a serious study," she said. "The important thing is to determine what we can do to reduce risks for the population."
Neighbors have frequently expressed concern over the airport, with at least nine accidents reported there since 2006.
