27-05-2008 - 22:53

TeliaSonera AB has agreed to sell Apple Inc.'s iPhone in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, the Nordic telecom operator said Tuesday.

In a one-sentence statement, the Stockholm-based company said it would start selling the combined iPod-cell phone-Internet device in the Nordic and Baltic countries later this year.

TeliaSonera spokesman Jan Sjoberg declined further comment, saying additional details would be given at a later date.

Earlier this month, Apple signed a similar deal with French wireless operator Orange for it to be the exclusive provider in Belgium and Romania.

Cupertino, California-based Apple has also struck exclusive deals for the iPhone with AT&T Inc. in the U.S., O2 in Britain, T-Mobile in Germany and Orange in France.

Apple plans further expansion later this year through the partnership with Mexico City-based America Movil SAB. The top mobile phone operator in Latin America said earlier this month it plans to bring the iPhone to all of its Latin American operations.

Apple has also signed deals with Rogers Communications Inc., Telecom Italia SpA and Vodafone Group PLC.

Since the handset went on sale in June in the U.S., Apple has sold 5.4 million worldwide, based on data as of the end of Apple's fiscal second quarter, which ended in March.
