Several local governments in Taiwan say they are canceling their traditional barbecues at the upcoming moon festival to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Yang Hsiao-tung, spokesman for Taipei city government, says the capital will not host its traditional 10,000-person barbecue dinner at a riverside park during the festival next Sunday.
Several other local governments and communities announced Sunday that they will instead serve fried rice or noodles to help reduce carbon emissions.
Barbecue parties have become a main feature of Taiwan's moon festival, but environmentalists say they create tons of garbage and cause air pollution.
