A pickup truck crashed through a busy sushi restaurant in a shopping mall in British Columbia, killing two women, police and witnesses said Friday.

Cpl. Dale L. Carr said the truck sped through the mall parking lot and slammed through the plate glass window of the Halu Sushi restaurant in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on Thursday night.

Reports said as many as 45 people were in the restaurant at dinner time. Wtinesses said the truck travelled right through the restaurant and ended up in the kitchen, scattering diners as it crashed into tables and chairs.

Carr said three other people were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while three others were treated in the hospital for minor injuries.

The victims, whose names have not been released, were aged 19 and 46.

Carr said homicide investigators are looking into whether the incident was an intentional act.

Candice Denoni, who saw the blue truck speed through the sushi restaurant, said the driver appeared to make no effort to slow down.

"It was going very fast. I don't know if he (the driver) fell asleep, but there were no brakes," she said.

The 51-year-old driver is in police custody, but no charges have filed yet.
