The British government is giving some help to farmers after a wet summer by allowing them to use mechanical equipment and vehicles on waterlogged land.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said Wednesday that it was granting a temporary exemption from European regulations intended to protect soil quality.

The National Farmers Union had sought the exemption following recent heavy rains that made it impossible for some farmers to reach their crops. The group noted that rain in central England in August was 157 percent above average, and farms in northeast England were badly hit by flooding.
