WWII bomb defused in downtown Berlin

Police say a World War II-era bomb unearthed in downtown Berlin has been defused.

The 220-pound (100-kilogram) Soviet bomb was taken away for disposal after experts removed its two detonators overnight.

Police say in a statement issued Saturday that the bomb was found Friday during construction work outside the newly restored Neues Museum.

For hours the surrounding area was sealed off. The area includes a theater, part of the Unter den Linden boulevard, Chancellor Angela Merkel's private apartment and a commuter railway line.

Unexploded World War II bombs are still found frequently in Germany.
