Netherlands winger Ryan Babel is out of the European Championship after injuring his ankle in training on Saturday.
He was replaced by Sevilla defender Khalid Boulahrouz.
A scan showed Babel tore ankle ligaments, which will sideline the 21-year-old player for several weeks, the Dutch soccer association said.
Babel's injury came a day before the Netherlands plays Wales in its last friendly before the European Championship.
Coach Marco Van Basten's team plays world champion Italy on June 9 in Berne to open its Euro 2008 campaign. It also plays World Cup runner-up France and Romania in what is considered the toughest qualifying group.
Van Basten said he was disappointed Babel would not be at the tournament.
"He has shown good form in recent weeks," he told the official Dutch supporters' Web site. "It's a great shame he won't be with us."
Van Basten said it was difficult to say exactly how the injury happened.
"It was unexpected. There was contact with another player beforehand. We can't point to a direct cause," he said.
It may have been caused by "a sort of tiredness at the end of the season," Van Basten added.
