Former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt survived a five-set scare to be one of three Australians through to the second round on the opening day of Wimbledon.
Hewitt, battling a hip injury which has seen him only play sparingly this year, came from behind to defeat Dutch world No.64 Robin Haase 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 6-2.
"It's a little bit sore but I just have to put up with it," Hewitt said of his injury.
"This is Wimbledon, one of my favourite tournaments, otherwise I probably wouldn't be playing. I will just keep trying and hopefully it will hold up."
The 2002 champion's next opponent will be Spaniard Albert Montanes, who defeated Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.
Hewitt has played Montanes, the world No.69, only once before, defeating him in straight sets in the first round of the 2006 US Open.
Casey Dellacqua enhanced her reputation as a giant-killer at Grand Slam events when she upset Swiss No.12 seed Patty Schnyder 6-4 3-6 6-1, while compatriot Sam Stosur also progressed, crushing Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2 6-2.
Dellacqua's victory was her fourth over a seed at a Grand Slam this year and also her second over Schnyder, who she beat at Melbourne Park on her way to a fourth-round appearance, at a major.
She will clash with French world No.59 Pauline Parmentier, a 7-5 6-4 victor over Akgul Amanmuradova from Uzbekistan, for a berth in the third round, while Stosur will play Czech No.18 seed Nicole Vaidisova.
The only losers for Australia were Chris Guccione and Russian-born Anastasia Rodionova.
Guccione received a lucky break when his original opponent, French Open semi-finalist Gael Monfils, withdrew due to shoulder inflammation however the Australian could not defeat Serbian lucky loser Ilia Bozoljacin, beaten 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3.
The loss to Bozoljacin, a 23-year-old ranked 197 in the world playing his third Grand Slam, continued Guccione's dismal record in the majors.
From 11 appearances, the Australian has only won just three matches and failed to progress past the second round.
Rodionova was wiped off the court in the final two sets by Chinese hope Li Na, who won 3-6 6-0 6-1.
