Doncaster beats Leeds 1-0 to win promotion to the League Championship

26-05-2008 - 03:02

Doncaster will play in the League Championship next season after beating Leeds 1-0 in the League One playoff at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

James Hayter scored the winner in the 48th minute with a header.

"It is an unbelievable feeling to score the winner," Hayter said. "I have been dreaming about it all week."

Five years ago, Doncaster played in the semiprofessional Conference league. Now for the first time since 1957, Doncaster will be playing in the second tier of English soccer.

Leeds overcame a 15-point deduction at the start of the season _ for financial irregularities _ to qualify for the playoffs and begin the ascent back to the Premier League.

Leeds was an inaugural member of the Premier League in 1992 and reached the semifinals of the Champions League in 2001.

But poor financial mismanagement led to relegation from the Premier League in 2004. This season was its first in the third tier of English soccer.

On Saturday, Hull beat Bristol City 1-0 to reach the Premier League _ the first time in its 104-year history that it will play in the top division. On Monday, Stockport plays Rochdale in the League Two playoff for the right to play in League One next season.
